South Tyroleans enjoy hiking along the historic irrigation canals (Waalwege) on Sundays, which is not a surprise, since the easy walks can be done with the entire family with little effort. One of the most beautiful is surely the Senales Canal Trail (Schnalswaalweg).
It begins in the village centre of Ciardes/Tschars. Go past the church on trail no. 3 and through the mixed forest. Follow the Senales Canal (Schnalswaal) until you reach the Juval Castle (possible refreshment stop). To descend, follow trail no. 1 downhill until you reach the junction with the Staven Canal Trail (Stabener Waalweg). Continue from here until you reach the Himmelreich hotel and restaurant and the Himmelreich countryside tavern (possible refreshment stop). Take the narrow road from here back to the village centre of Ciardes.
